The world of independent game development has recently encountered a significant challenge, as creators find their work being replicated and profited from by others. A peculiar surge in traffic to VoltekPlay's platform on itch.io led the developers to discover an unauthorized iOS version of their game, which had been gaining unexpected popularity. Through organic Google searches, numerous players were directed to this page, but it was only after adding a poll asking users where they had found the game that the extent of the issue became clear.
Unfortunately, many gamers ended up on the App Store page of the plagiarized version instead of the original. The counterfeit game, named "My Baby or Not!" on iOS, was reportedly climbing the paid games charts with thousands of downloads. This situation highlighted not just one instance of intellectual property theft but also raised concerns about previous releases by the same developer. Marwane Benyssef, credited for "My Baby or Not!", had previously launched another game that suspiciously resembled an existing title available on itch.io.
VoltekPlay took swift action by filing a DMCA copyright claim against the infringing app. Apple responded by encouraging direct communication between the parties involved to resolve the dispute. In response to the controversy, Apple removed all traces of Benyssef’s developer page and associated games from the iOS App Store. This incident underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and supporting honest creators. It serves as a reminder for platforms to implement stricter measures to prevent such unethical practices, fostering a fairer and more innovative environment for all developers.
