The Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival recently concluded, recognizing several compelling cinematic works. Lucile Hadzihalilovic's intriguing fairy tale, 'The Ice Tower,' featuring Marion Cotillard, Gaspar Noé, and August Diehl, earned the prestigious H.R. Giger 'Narcisse' prize and the 'Imaging the Future' prize for its outstanding production design. This 1970s-set narrative follows an orphan's captivating obsession with an actress filming an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen.'

Beyond the main award, the festival highlighted other exceptional films. Pavlo Ostrikov's 'U Are the Universe,' a heartwarming space-themed romance, resonated deeply with audiences, securing both the audience award and the youth prize, as judged by local high school students. Additionally, Julia Kowalski's 'Her Will Be Done' received a special jury mention, lauded for its unique blend of folk horror and regional realism. The international critics' jury, which included a representative from Variety, celebrated 'Honey Bunch,' an unconventional relationship drama from directors Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Sims-Fewer, recognizing its distinct 1970s aesthetic and unpredictable storyline. Emilie Blichfeldt's 'The Ugly Stepsister' was honored with the Silver Melies for Best European Fantastic Film, further showcasing the diverse and innovative talent present at the festival.

The festival's ethos of community and inclusivity was a recurring theme. Filmmaker Addison Heimann, who previously attended NIFFF, highlighted the supportive atmosphere, describing it as a place where artists feel at home, encouraged, and connected. His past participation not only garnered him a youth jury prize but also facilitated crucial industry relationships that led to his latest project, 'Touch Me,' produced by fellow filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. This emphasis on camaraderie extends to the festival's programming, which has consistently embraced queer genre storytelling. French journalist Camille Regache, a member of this year's critics' jury, noted the significant presence of LGBTQ+ narratives, underscoring the festival's intentional efforts to showcase diverse identities and foster fresh, authentic storytelling within the genre space. The variety of approaches to queer themes—ranging from normalized portrayals to more avant-garde explorations—demonstrates NIFFF's commitment to expanding the horizons of fantastic cinema.
